Inspiration

I am always on the look out for inspiration to feed my own creativity and improve my approaches to selling.  Call me an opportunist but I spent forty minutes yesterday browsing in the new interior design / vintage shop called 'Jacob Street' on the Lisburn Road.  Every nook and cranny was creatively utilised complimented with an essence of quality in retro, vintage and contemporary stock.  I screeched to a halt and whipped into an empty parking space in front of the adjoining shop.  The window display is magnificent and the shop had a welcoming glow like a fantasy Aladdin's cave.   While attired in my shabby chic look (jeans and black cotton top dressed with a simple brooch) I was warmly welcomed by the sales assistant.  The shop of my dreams and obviously the proprietor as well but realistically this clever lady is not reliant on vintage to make a living but on her ability to compliment an interior design business with gems of the past!

Congratulations and good luck, Jacob Street from The Big Brown Suitcase.

China just isn't for Tea!

Teacups are not just for drinking tea...... there are endless possibilities on how to use those odd china cups that are handed down as part of the family jewels.  Try making some candles in the cups or use them as a trinket holder on your dressing table.  The rising popularity of the good old cake stand sees many of us churning out two and three tiered centre pieces.  Its not just cake that can be displayed on the plates, try cheese bites, raw vegetables or fruit.  Why not try all three taking advantage of the different levels.

The possibilities are endless!

I Collect Memories.........

As a collector of memories the first thing I learned was that an item over 20 years is classed as 'Vintage'!  Once I had sussed that out the fun part began. However, I am not alone in my quest, indeed everyone and his son or daughter is doing it!  The next hurdle is sourcing the right stock that attracts the right customer but not necessarily something I like .  Having come from a family business with a strong history for retail and services in a rural community it is effortless for me to understand the concept of diversity in a buyers market.

The Big Brown Suitcase derived its name from a distant but strong memory I had as a child when the door to door salesman existed.  He would be invited into our front living room by my mother and I was excited about the wonderful things that were packed into his big brown suitcase.  Oddities, quirky, stockings, spools, tea towels, needles, ornaments linen hankies, ribbon, baubles.......... a bottomless pit.

My mother would always have bought something from him as I watched him pack his case and head off to the next call.  Today, as I source my stock, I look for quality but keep one eye open to find quirky items that are of little use but have a nostalgic value that only I would know.......to me!

What tangible object provokes your favourite memory?
